A memorial service will be held Friday, July 3, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Newberg, 13021 Born St., Jones, with Pastor Mike Owen officiating.
Obituary Notice
Shirley Ann Barks, 85, of Jones, passed away Friday, June 12, 2026 at Elkhart General Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
She was born February 16, 1941 in Bangor, the daughter of Horace and Elsie (Blain) Hackler, and graduated from Three Rivers High School with the Class of 1958.
Shirley married Norman Swinehart and had two daughters and two sons, but when that marriage ended in divorce, she raised her family as a single mom. After 1965 she married Richard Barks and they made their home in Jones.
She worked at the Dime Store, then later at Skamper Trailer (Thor) and Pilgrim Trailer Factory. She retired from Pilgrim when they closed their doors.
Shirley was a faithful and dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Newberg.
She enjoyed quilting, gardening, reading, and volunteering for the Cass County C.O.A.
Remaining to cherish her memory are her husband, Richard Barks; son, Kenny Swinehart; daughters, June (Michael) Oaks and Kathy (Ray) Wise; grandchildren, Jason, Ilea, Patrick, Elwin, Felicia, Diane, Nicollete, Naomi, and Iyana; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Ilene Wisinski; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jay Swinehart; brother, John Hackler; sister-in-law, Shirley Hackler; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Donations in Shirley’s memory may be directed to First Baptist Church of Newberg. Envelopes will be available at the church and at the funeral home.
