Obituary Notice
Mr. David Arthur Anderson, “Bubba”, age 80, of Mattawan, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025 at the Life Care Center of Plainwell surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Anderson was born on Dec. 4, 1944 in Albion, the son of the late Carl Wallace and Helen Louise (Day) Anderson.
David was born and raised in Albion, graduating with the class of 1963. He went on to study Physical Education at Adrian College, graduating with a B.A. degree in 1967. While at Adrian, David became a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. On Dec. 19, 1970, David married the love of his life, Cheryl Lynn Hughey. David later received his Master’s in Physical Education from Western Michigan University in 1973.
David began his teaching career in White Pigeon where he taught for five years. He continued his teaching career in 1972 at Lawton High School teaching history and physical education. David coached varsity football and baseball at Lawton as well as at Mattawan High School where he was the defensive coordinator for varsity football and head coach of the junior varsity baseball team. David retired from Lawton public schools in 2007 as a very active P.E. and history teacher and mentor. In his forty-year career, David touched countless lives of the students he taught and coached and spent many summers as a driver’s education teacher helping many kids earn their driver’s licenses.
Mr. Anderson was a very accomplished athlete in his younger days. David played basketball, football, and baseball at Albion High School, and then continued his athletic career at Adrian College. After he finished his degree at Adrian, he went on to play minor league baseball in the region.
David was an avid sports fan, especially of the Detroit Tigers and Lions, the Kalamazoo Wings, Adrian College baseball, the Lawton Blue Devils, and the University of Michigan. Outside of sports, David loved attending concerts, especially of his favorite band, Styx, who he saw probably at least 50 times. He also loved watching old westerns in his retirement.
Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leonard and Douglas Anderson; one sister, Kristine Collum; and a special nephew, Michael Egnatuk.
Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife, Cheryl L. Anderson, of Mattawan; one daughter, Nicole (Matt) McLean, of Monkton, MD; one son, Matthew (Bay) Anderson, of Redmond, WA; grandchildren, Zelly and Zuriel; sister, Carol Lee Egnatuk; sister-in-law, Ruthann (Douglas) Anderson; and sister-in-law, Patricia (Leonard) Anderson; and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

I am sorry for your loss Cheryl. I knew Dave (and you) during the years I taught at Lawton. As a new teacher, Dave welcomed me into the ranks of Blue Devils. Wings games, coaches meetings, lunch euchre with Gail, and Wally dressing in drag for a fund raiser (imagine that now), and teaching teenagers. Dave had a successful career. I know he made an impression on me and imparted fond memories.
So sorry. My kids loved him
I’m so sorry for your loss. One of my favorite teachers. I was his 4th hour cadet teacher in physical education during the ‘77-78 school year. Sending love and condolences.
Mr. Anderson is a great man. He did a lot for me when I was a young kid

I taught and coached with Bubba, and we had a lot of fun and laughs. He will not be forgotten!
Cheryl and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Bubba was hands down my favorite teacher in my 4 years at Lawton High. I can’t count how many packs of Hubba Bubba I threw to him in the 4 years of having him as my PE instructor lol. We were partners in crime in every single 2 person activity in class! Whether it be golf, hand ball or what ever it was! I’d hear, Chick, you’re with me lol. Ty Dave for the 4 great years of having you as a teacher. I’ll never forget you! Hugs to Cheryl and the rest of the family
Him and Mr. Everly was my 2 favorite teachers. I remember spending my time on Saturdays with them cleaning the community center. I’m so sad R.I.H mr. Anderson
