Obituary Notice

David Lee Hinman, age 77, of Three Rivers, passed away peacefully at his home on February 27, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.

David was born on July 1, 1948 in Michigan City, IN, the son of the late Raymond and Lenora (Zebell) Hinman.

David (Dave) was raised in Three Oaks, Michigan, and graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in Business. It was there he met the love of his life, Susan (Reichenbach) Hinman, whom he married on August 26, 1972. Dave was in the National Guard and began his career as an accountant with General Motors in Flint, MI. He and Sue moved their family to Three Rivers where he worked for Hydra-Matic, and later retired from American Axle in 2003 on his 55th birthday.

Dave was active in many sports throughout his life, baseball being his favorite. In his years after college he enjoyed playing racquetball and loved playing softball in different recreational leagues with his friends. Golf was a big part of Dave’s life and he could often be found at Pine View Golf Course enjoying a round with friends and family. His son was able to experience Dave’s hole-in-one at Pine View.

Dave’s true love was his family. Traveling was important to Dave and Sue. Their family has lots of fun memories in Florida, Yellowstone, and Northern Michigan. He never missed an after school event or sport his children participated in and most recently loved watching his grandchildren do the same. Dave and Sue enjoyed being snowbirds and taking their RV down south to Arizona and Florida. In his retirement years he stayed competitive by playing pickleball. Dave had a vibrant spirit and a great sense of humor which will be missed by all who knew him.

Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife Susan Hinman, daughters Kelly (Chad) Hinkley and Jodie (Brad) Glessner, son Matthew (Danielle) Hinman, brother Jerry (Maria Jackson) Hinman, and grandchildren Alyssa, Madi, Michael, Brynn and Myla, as well as many nieces, nephews, and long time friends.

  5. I remember David let me ride their donkey Pedro when I was little. With a twinkle in his eye David said “I hope he doesn’t lay down and roll over on you.” Never got on Pedro again. I’m sure David got a kick out of that.

  6. I just heard about David and am so sorry. He was 7 years older than me but I grew up two doors down on Cherry Street. It was nice to have older cousins right there and I always thought David was cool.

  7. Dear Sue and family
I am so sorry for the loss of an incredible husband, father, grandfather, brother, and Friend. Dave was all that and so much more. Always positive and and especially welcoming. to everyone he knew. I first met Dave at a 3rd grade enrichment basketball program for girls. I was signing up my granddaughter and he was enrolling his daughter Jodie. I came out of the meeting with 10 red shirts and a “ coaching volunteer. He looked at me and said, “ I think I might be able to help!” Help he did and with his positive determination we became a team that never lost a game, I later became Jodie’s teacher and he and Sue became a great supporter of education. Dave was just a really nice person who I will always remember as a guy who never met a person he didn’t like. RIP my friend and thank you for all that you taught me.
    Hugs and prayers for
    Sue, Kelly, Jodie, and Matt
    May you continue his legacy.

  8. I can”t imagine having a better brother than David. We enjoyed a lifetime of sharing our love of sports, animals,
and simply having fun together. He would always be in the crowd to cheer on and support the teams I had the privilege to coach at the high school and junior college level.

Maria and I attended as many of David and Sue’s children and grandchildren athletic events as we could, and we will continue to do that in the future.

I love David with all my heart, and life will not be the same without him. He leaves behind a wonderful family and Maria and I will continue to enjoy our great friendship with them.

RIP David,…………you will be remembered forever.

  10. Sue, Im so sorry for your loss.
He was a good man and I know he will be missed.
I’ve been thinking about you. All the memories…
Please let me know if there’s anything I can do…

  11. I really did enjoy playing softball with Dave. He came to our team when he moved to Three Rivers. It was normal for Dave and Sue to bring the whole family to the games with their kids playing with all the other offspring of team members. Dave had a special skill of placing the ball anywhere in the field someone wasn’t defending which gave him the highest batting average on our team. I remember Dave being kind and generous with his family and friends. All of us will miss him. Thanks Dave for being a friend!

  12. We are so saddened to learn of Dave’s passing! We so enjoyed meeting up with Sue and Dave when they were in Florida! We had such a good time talking to both of them! Dave was a very special person, full of life and fun! We will miss him so much!

    • First met Dave when my wife and I lived on cherry street in Three Oaks next to his parents. As life progressed Dave moved to Three Rivers and would come to visit every Flag Day in Three Oaks. He was a super guy. Will miss him dearly. 🙏

  13. I enjoyed knowing Dave at Hydra-Magic for several years. His work space was on the other side of my cubicle wall & we enjoyed many comments and conversations across that wall. Dave was always full of fun on the H-M golf league.
We figured out how to repurpose/recycle the Disney World ID passes that my family used so his family could use them.
My prayers are that God will wrap his arm around your shoulders until your pain & grief lessens.
