Service Details

His family will receive friends Friday, October 11, 2024 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Hohner Funeral Home, 1004 Arnold St., Three Rivers. A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Gene French officiating. He will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery.

Obituary Notice

Richard Allen Metty, 80, of Three Rivers, who impacted many lives in the county through his work in security at the St. Joseph County Courthouse, passed away Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Three Rivers Health.

He was born September 23, 1944 in Three Rivers, the son of Gordon and Pearl (Steen) Metty, and graduated from Centreville High School with the Class of 1962.

Helping on the farm from his early teens, Dick developed a tremendous work ethic that he maintained throughout his life. He was employed at Simpson Paper Mill in Vicksburg for 23 years.

While at the paper mill, he began a job in the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Reserves. He loved helping people and went on to work at the St. Joseph County Courthouse. In addition to his main duty, security, he mentored troubled boys and juveniles, transported prisoners, and served papers.

In his free time, he enjoyed mowing his lawn.

Dick loved joking around, always smiling and having something funny to say.

Remaining to cherish his memory are his son, James (Christa) Metty; beloved grandchildren, Wyatt and Alayna Metty; beloved step-grandchildren, Jackie and Bobby Perry; sister, Donna Handy.

He was preceded in death by his faithful companion, Helen Smith; parents; and brothers, William Metty and Terry Metty.

Memorials in Dick’s name may be directed to Spirit of Truth Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

  1. As someone I only began to know and know of you in the year of 2019, I appreciate what little bit of time you became a great help. To appreciating your humor, and jokes. To the countless times you served important papers, to help protect. You will always be missed and appreciated by the community. Thank you Dick for your constant years of service.

  2. Dick worked almost up to the day of his death because he loved his job- helping others. I had the pleasure of working with him for several years and always enjoyed his sense of humour and dedication. I know that others have had the same experience with him. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.

  3. Dick was a man who truly lived life on his terms, with boldness and a spirit that couldn’t be contained. He was refreshingly direct and always knew what he liked, especially regarding holiday treats. I’ll always cherish the times we spent at family gatherings and trying to create those unique Splenda recipes for him – he was an excellent taste tester. Meaning, he always went back for seconds. He will be deeply missed. <3

  4. Dick was an all around great man! He taught me quite a bit when I became a reserve. From there our friendship continued from me stopping over to having beers at the FOP lodge. If I ever needed help with anything and I called, he’d be there. He will truly be missed by many within our community.

  6. I’m so sorry for Dick’s passing. My association with him was mainly in the 60’s when we worked in the cutting department at Denton’s in Centreville. Those were some good, and often hilarious times. I still miss those good old days. Rest in peace friend.

    • Richard was our old landlord and he was a great guy. Always laughed at jokes or he’d tell you some of his. He was easygoing and very nice. He will surely be missed by many people especially his family. I’ll be praying for the family for comfort.

      • You were the best person I’ve ever encounter in this life. I’ll miss being able to contact you for the always problem solving wisdom you gave and the genuine caring you mixed in with it that made it stick. I love you and hope to be lucky enough to see you again.

  7. What a sweet, yet no BS – human being. I learned so much from knowing Dick. How to stay focused and alert, how to clean the revolver the “right” way, and how to crack a little joke when stress was up. He never failed to help when he could, regardless of who needed it or what it entailed. Forever grateful to have met him and call him a friend and a mentor. God has gained one hell of an Angel.

  8. It’s difficult to put into words how much Richard meant to so many. He was always someone I looked forward to working with. I wish heaven didn’t have to take him so soon. We will all miss you, Dick.

  9. I had the privilege to know Dick for many years working with him and doing work on his rentals for and with him. I cared very much for him. He and I joked around with each other all the time he was a great man and friend. His son Jim is one of my best friends so I really got to know him very well. I will miss him very much. My deepest sympathies go out to his family. Rest in peace Dick ( old man ) as I used to call him..🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

  10. I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dick Metty. Over the past 33 years I knew him, he played an important role not only in my life but also the lives of my children Alayna & Wyatt Metty and my two other children whom were step grand kids. His love and guidance will always be a cherished part of their memories. My heart breaks for the Metty family and everyone who’s grieving. He will be dearly missed.

    • Rest easy Pops. It is hard to think about you not being here. I will miss you randomly stopping by to chat and catch up. The world is a better place because you were here. Thank you for always being there when I needed you.
