Service Details

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 23, 2021 followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. at Hohner Funeral Home in Three Rivers, MI. Verlynne’s son-in-law, Daniel Carr, will officiate. A video of the service is available here.

Obituary Notice

Verlynne O. Kern, 82, of Three Rivers, MI passed away at Rose Arbor Hospice, in Kalamazoo, MI, on April 18, 2021, after a brief non-covid illness.

She was born Anita Verlynne Olson, in Clear Lake, IA, the daughter of Emmett and Luella (Tanner) Olson.

On November 30, 1958, she married the love of her life, Monte James Kern, in Clear Lake, IA. He preceded her in death on April 13, 2018.

Verlynne was a loyal Navy wife, following her sailor to bases in California, Illinois, and Florida, as well as the Philippine Islands.

She was active in the Navy Wives’ Club until she became a mother. She then became active in the various activities and clubs in which her children participated.

She was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, and all the schools for which her children and grandchildren played.

Verlynne is survived by her children; Luellen (Daniel) Carr, Monte Kern Jr., and Lynn (Robert) Payne. Grandchildren; Stephanie, Rebekah, Hannah and Elijah Carr; Tyler and Morgan Kern; and Austyn and Henrik Payne. Great-grandchildren; Tyler Jr. and Kanora Kern. Siblings; Marilynne Kroeze of Iowa, Donald (Donna) OIson of Iowa and Leonard (Susan) Olson of Minnesota. Several nieces and nephews.

Verlynne was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a granddaughter, Mateja Payne.

Memorials may be directed to the Centreville Athletic Boosters or the White Pigeon Community Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
