Obituary Notice

Carolyn Sue Wolfe, 93, of Three Rivers, passed away Sunday, December 10, 2023 at Rose Arbor Place.

She was born April 29, 1930 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Charles and Glennice (Pennels) Harrington, and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School.

Sue was employed at Plainwell Paper, where she was proud to be their first woman to hold the job of purchasing agent. She owned Tom & Becky’s Clothes Raft in Plainwell, and later became a realtor through Jaqua.

She was active with the Three Rivers Church of the Nazarene, Habitat for Humanity, and the Plainwell Business Owners Association. Very professional in everything she did, Sue was self-motivated, strong-willed, and also a compassionate caregiver.

After friends introduced her to Dan Wolfe, the couple married in 1970. Together, they enjoyed traveling throughout the Midwest, spending time with grandchildren, and playing cards with her sister, brother-in-law, and great-aunt and uncle Russ and Goldie.

Sue was happiest when working in the dirt. She dug her own pond in her backyard while in her 80s, and often could be seen mowing her acre of lawn. She wrote and published poetry, painted, did calligraphy, and loved decorating her house for the holidays.

Remaining to cherish her memory are several grandchildren, along with nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Wolfe, in 1994; sons, Jack Layne and Gary Layne; and sister, Betty Wheat.

  1. Sue was my neighbor and friend. I enjoyed her friendship, since moving here 19 years ago, so much. We had fun at the neighborhood ladies’ lunches for several of those years. I loved seeing her many craft projects and the beautiful decorations around her house. I strive to be more like her. My condolences to her family and friends. She will never be forgotten.
