Obituary Notice

Wilma Kristine McLain, 65, of Millersburg, IN, passed away Friday, September 15, 2023, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Wilma was born September 1, 1958, in Kalamazoo, MI. She was the daughter of Willem and Jacoba (Hoexum) Doornbos who immigrated from the Netherlands. Wilma graduated from Portage Central High School and earned her bachelors in science from Western Michigan University. Following graduation, Wilma completed a medical internship program at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids and enjoyed working as a med tech at Lakeview Hospital in Paw Paw.

On June 2, 1980, Wilma married her high school sweetheart, Patrick McLain. They soon started a family, raising five daughters, which would grow to be one of their greatest shared joys.

Wilma was a woman of great faith, strength, and resilience. She loved God and was admired by her family and friends for her kind and loving heart, gentle spirit, and passion for helping others. She was dedicated to her local homeschool and church communities and loved staying connected to her Dutch roots.

She had a creative and nurturing spirit; she enjoyed homesteading, spinning and weaving yarn, wreath making with her daughters, making loved ones and new friends feel welcome in her beautifully decorated home with home cooked meals and baked goods, and always offering her prayers and support to those in need.

Knowing Wilma is in the arms of Jesus, reunited with her beloved family and friends, free from her wheelchair, and walking on streets of gold has brought the family much comfort. Remaining to cherish her memory is her husband, Patrick; daughters Kristine (Robert), Megan (Derek), Shaina, and Abigail; sisters Johanna Thompson (Mike) and Barbara Doornbos, as well as many extended family members, friends, and loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father Willem and Jacoba (Hoexum) Doornbos and her daughter Keriann McLain.

There were highlights, there were tragedies, but there was also always love.

I,ll sign off with a few Dutch sentences,

Ik zal me Wilma blijvend herinneren als een goed mens en als iemand waar iedereen van hield.
God,s zegen en tegen Wilma zeg ik,
    Doe laiverd

  2. My memories of Wilma are of her sweet and kind soul. She always had a way to encourage that spoke such wisdom. I got to know Wilma at T.R.C.F. in the children’s ministry. Wow, that was a huge undertaking to lead us all. She had so many wonderful ideas to make it great. I remember her encouraging me in homeschooling when things got rough. The world is definitely a better place for her time she lived in it.
